Each water harvest requires we row out to find the best salt blooms off the coast of Marblehead.

Our salt is made according to a 1,600-year-old process perfected by monks of Mount Athos, yet prepared using local sea water from the Marblehead coast North of Boston.

We are one of the few salterns on the East Coast of the United States and the only one that uses ancient, monastic saltern methods.

Unlike mass produced salts, ours benefit from a seasonality and vintage that can only occur with small batch salts. Autumn, winter, spring and summer salts are unique in that they have distinct algal, current and saline bloom signatures.

We can also vary the minerality and the salinity within a certain tolerance for our more demanding customers providing a bespoke saline experience.

You may also notice the live taste quality and delicate crystalline structure of our fresh salt that melts right on contact. Because of the freshness of our salt, you can also use less of it which makes it perfect for those looking to cut down on their salt consumption.

Shipping Information

We are a small business in a world where "free second day shipping" has become a part of America's culture.  With due respect to Amazon.com, we just can't afford it.  We make the salt by hand and will do our best to get orders out as quickly as possible.

While in the past many orders have been able to ship next day, due to a series of protracted renovations to our new monastic complex, the Shrine of St. Nicholas, we are looking at a backlog that may be more than a month for some of the flavored salts. We are working on this. Please be patient with us. We try to accomodate rush orders so just email us if you have a particular date by which you require your salt. We make, label and package the salt by hand.  It is a very customized product that takes significant time and effort for which we charge a fair price.  From a start of a boil until the salt is packed and ready to ship can take three to four days. We also keep the fasts and feasts of the Orthodox Church so you will experience delays around Christmas, Lent, Easter, Assumption. Order early. Once construction is complete this will resolve itself and we’ll update accordingly.

Theo doesn't have opposable thumbs so it's much harder for him to help pack and ship than it is to answer emails.

Orders ship USPS Priority Mail with tracking and insurance.

International orders ship USPS Priority International without tracking.

If you live in Marblehead, why not come to St. Nicholas and pick up your salt in person? We stock our salt at the Shrine of St. Nicholas (an Orthodox Church) on 124 Pleasant Street in Marblehead, next to Mr. Katsoulakos the tailor and across from the donut shop. Currently we’re open “pop-up style” on Saturdays from 2-4 PM, go down the driveway to the garage door.

Please send an email before placing an order with any special shipping requests such as tracking for international orders, different carriers or overnight mail requests (sometimes it's necessary and sometimes we can accommodate -- let's hope they're both the same day for you!).

Shipping costs and credit card/paypal/internet processor fees are not refundable.
